Budgie’s Journal #24 – To Kill a Manuscript
Okay. If you’re following this blog closely you’ll know I finished the first draft of Blood Drive last night. If you didn’t know that, you now know. Upon completion, I wondered what I’d do next, and my mind shifted to a half-finished novel I’ve picked up and put down four times now. Then I wondered if it’s time to finish or dump it.
It’s a tough decision, like Sophie’s Choice but without Nazis. I had high hopes for this book, but it seems like I lose traction every time I get a few chapters out. It didn’t keep me glued to the keyboard like Blood Drive or Freedom Lane. If I can’t focus on writing, will my readers focus on reading it?
I’m not saying it’s a bad story. In my head it’s good, really good. Maybe it’s the risqué nature of the story or the over abundance of romance. I often say a writer shouldn’t have a comfort zone, but I came way out of mine for this one.
So I may give it a read or make Siri read it to me. I’ll decide whether or not to dump 25k words before I start writing the second 25. I’ll be sure you keep you all abreast of developments.
